Statement of Fact
By Attorney Jennifer Harbury
"Amnesty International considers Leonard Peltier to be a political prisoner whose avenues of redress have long been exhausted.... Amnesty International recognizes that a retrial is no longer a feasible option and believes that Leonard Peltier should be immediately and unconditionally released."

This self portrait is suffused with powerful colors and contrast. Despite his continued incarceration, one can see his inner strength and his hope for the future. Mr. Peltier has a number of paintings that are absolutely beautiful and available for purchase. Please remember that as a federal prisoner, the money for these paintings is not for his own personal material gain. The money is used to help in his ongoing legal defense case, and is also used for donation purposes to other worthy causes.

Immortalized in Peter Mathiessen's In The Spirit of Crazy Horse, Leonard Peltier now in his 24th year of confinement at Leavenworth, was wrongfully convicted of the killing of two FBI agents in 1977. Prison Writings, compiled by Peltier during his incarceration, tells the extraordinary story of his life, his impoverished upbringing in the Dakotas, his gradual identification as a leader and Native American warrior during the political upheavals o f the late 1960's and early 1970's and the tense battles with the government that led to the "Incident at Oglala" (made into a prize winning movie by Robert Redford).

Robert Redford is the executive producer (and narrator) of this fine, eye-opening documentary about the violent events that took place in 1975 on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. Indian activists ended up in an extended standoff with FBI agents, and the result was several deaths, including two federal men whose killing (according to many people) was never clearly attributed to a specific gunman. Nevertheless, the government laid blame for the tragedy on Leonard Peltier, a Sioux political leader who has long been a focus for supporters believing he took the fall, possibly heroically, for others. Peltier has spent many years in prison, and Apted's film, which is hardly ambiguous in its commitment toward Peltier's hoped-for freedom, is persuasive in both its detail and its case against brutal federal policies toward Indians. Whatever one's position on the Peltier question, this is a compelling piece of work.
